Difference between open and closed cell foam
What is open Cell Foam and closed-cell foam?
Open-cell foam and closed-cell foam are both kinds of foam material. They have different forms of breathable pores, so their phySical properties and applications are also different.Open-cell foam refers to a number of pores, the pores can be connected, and air can go in and out of the foam material; and closed-cell foam is not in the foam; there are holes, so the air will not go in and out of the foam.
Differences in Physical Properties
1. Water absorption
Open-cell foam does not have closed pores, which leads to strong water absorption and makes it unsuitable for moisture absorption. On the other hand, closed-cell foam has no pores and does not absorb water, so it can be used in waterproofing.
2. Density
The density of open-cell foam is generally lower than that of closed-cell foam, and due to the presence of air in the material, the elasticity of open-cell foam is stronger than that of closed-cell foam.
3. Permeability
Due to its ventilation holes, the permeability of open-cell foam is better than that of closed-cell foam, which does not apply to the field of sound insulation, and thus can only be used in the field of some needs for heat preservation or cooling.
Difference in application
Due to the different physical properties, open-cell foam and closed-cell foam are different in application fields.
1. Open cell foam
The application of open-cell foam is relatively wide, especially in the field of thermal insulation or cooling, such as thermal insulation equipment, manufacturing molding, and other fields.
2. Closed cell foam
Closed-cell foams are used more often than open-cell foams because they are more water resistant than open-cell foams. Because of its ability to be waterproof, closed-cell foam is used in water sports equipment, water sports equipment, and some water protection and life-saving equipment.
The difference between open-cell foam and closed-cell foam is that their physical properties and applications differ. Open-cell foam is used in the field of thermal insulation and cooling, while closed-cell foam is used in the field of water sports, protection, and life-saving.
